What is the Journey of Hope Program?

The Journey of Hope program is an international summer camp program which allows older orphans (ages 5 to 12) to visit and live with American host families for three to four weeks during the summer

Why do families participate in the JOH program?

Families usually participate because they are interested in adopting.  The orphans visit gives the parents, family members, and the orphans an opportunity to get to know each other in an informal home setting.  This helps determine whether a permanent loving bond could begin which may lead to a successful adoption.

However some families participate because they want to help orphans meet other families who are interested in adoption.  The orphans attend JOH picnics and “get-togethers”, during their visit, where the children hopefully will meet their future parents.

Why is the JOH program so important to this particular orphans?

This program is important because for orphans over the age of four, this is their last remaining hope for adoption. A terrible reality facing all orphans is if you are not adopted by age four, you will probable never be adopted.  Your remaining childhood will be spent in orphanage after orphanage until your sixteenth birthday, when you will be released to begin your adult life.

What is required by the host families?

The prospective host families should be available to host two children in their homes for a period of three to five weeks, sometime during the months of July and August.  The host parents must be in good physical health and, be approved, to host, by the orphan’s respective government.

Is an orphan assigned to us or do we pick on we are
interested in?

IOF strives to place an orphan with you who meets your stated preferences such as age and sex of the child. These preferences are communicated in the application process. You will be contacted in advance to let you know if we were able to do so.

How much does it cost to host an orphan?
There is no cost to host an orphan.  The family who adopts the orphan pays the hosting cost as part of their adopt.

What type of children participate in Journey of Hope?
The children who take part in the Journey of Hope are boys and girls who range in age from five to 12. Most come from orphanages in Russia or the Ukraine.  They are generally well behaved and in good health.

How long does the child stay with the host family?
The length of the visit is approximately 3-5 weeks.

What kind of supports are available during the child’s visit?
Social workers, translators, and IOF staff will all be available to support you during your child’s visit.

How do we handle the language barrier?
Volunteer translators are assigned to the child you are hosting.

What percentage of the participating orphans are actually adopted?
Historically, 93% of all orphans, which were legally available for adoption and participating in the program have been adopted.

What is the cost to adopt?

The cost to adopt an orphan is approximately $22,000.  However the Unite States government, though, the IRS tax code, will issue a $10,000 tax credit per child, for qualified parents, which may bring the effected cost to approximately $10,000.  In addition to the tax credits, a large number of employers offer employee benefits which include adoption payments.  Many people will take out a loan to fund the adoption and find that upon receiving tax reimbursements and employee benefit payments that much of their loan can be paid back quickly
